The Maffei Museum

maffei.jpg The Maffei Museum, on the opposite side of the square, in the courtyard of the Philharmonic Theatre, houses an exhibition of Greek, Roman and Mediaeval epigraphs collected by the Veronese scholar Scipione Maffei in the 1700s, also founder of the museum.


The Castelvecchio Museum

castelvecchio.jpg This fortified castle was built in 1355 under Cangrande II Scaligero and now houses one of Veneto’s most important art galleries. You can admire a collection of paintings, jewellery and weapons, as well as the equestrian figure of Cangrande I, removed from his tomb, strikingly displayed on an outdoor pedestal. Outstanding among the paintings are works by Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, a Madonna by Pisanello, Veronese's Descent from the Cross, a Tintoretto Nativity, and works by the two Tiepolos. The gallery is divided in different sections, one housing artworks from the late Roman early Christian period; the second medieval and Renaissance art .On the upper level you can find late Renaissance masterpieces, jewellery and weapons, dating back to the 6th century.


The Archaeological Museum

Not far from the roman theatre, you can visit the archaeological museum of Verona, that contains well- restored mosaics, upon which one depicting scenes of gladiatorial contests in the amphitheatre of the city, a bronze statue of Emperor Augustus Caesar, only ruler of ancient Rome after the fall of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony. The small cloister of this old monastery houses mosaics and ancient masonry fragments; in the adjoining rooms there is a collection of various objects from the past, like tombstones, pottery and glass.
